 The Foleo
« Thread Started on May 30, 2007, 7:18pm »

Sort of surprised no one started a thread on this yet...

So after seeing the ill-timed press release, I'm getting the impression that the Foleo is sort of a glorified docking station, only for a Treo. If you think about it... how many of us have port replicator/docking station solutions for our laptops? I know I had one for my Thinkpad and my Sony UX. Only with both of those, I connected to many peripherals, including a 23'' LCD. I'm gathering the Foleo is similar in concept, only it has its own display (probably UMPC size: 5'' to 7'') and it has its own memory, allowing it to sync between a Treo and itself. And with the new roadmap for non-Windows Treo's being linux, the big question I have is how compatible this thing will be. Will it work with older Treo's (the 650 has the same connector slot that the 680, etc have). And will it only sync with newer Linux-based Treo's? What about existing 680's? What about WinMo Treo's?

The Hawk is what a PC is to the Treo.The idea is good. But why do we have to buy a new device.
It seem some Treo owners also have a TX or Lifedrive. Why not just give/sell us an application which synchronises a Treo and a Palm, like does the Hawk with the Treo?

Pretty much what I was thinking. There are things the Treo can't do. So instead of working on what they have. they bring out a new product? I guess that's sexier than updating a slideout Treo keyboard or something. The LifeDrive had problems so they just let it die, same as they do with other products. What you have to keep in mind, I guess, is that Palm is a corporation. So working on an existing product doesn't do much. Starting a new product line with something as flashy as the FLOPPEO will have a much better impact on the stock price.

People! Read the entire press release or get info from someone who participated in the live webcast.

The Foleo is not a docking station for the Treo. It is a mobile computing device for web, email and document management. It will access the internet by either WiFi or by grabbing the Treo's connection. That means you can have full-screen/ full keyboard mobile computing wherever you are...hotspot or no.

The Foleo will also work with any WinMo smartphone...not just Treos; and, Palm is making it open, so that anyone (Nokia, Apple, etc.) can write API's into it for their smartphones. For people who have PC's at home, rely on their smartphones for mobile computing, and don't want to shell out for a laptop, there is a lot of potential market for this.

I direct you to tonight's editorial for more:

Will other linux programs run on it, like wine. I think this has to be answered before I plop down yet more money for a palm product. I like the instant on of a pda, and the fact that all the memory is flash based so it's probably a tougher device than a notebook. And as the amount of memory that cards hold goes up, it'll be easy to upgrade. But the battery life seems short for something without a harddrive. And a touch screen would be better IMO. From the sqecs so far it seems like it's meant as keyboard and screen for a treo instead of a stand alone device. I don't know, my minds not made up if it'll be as usefull as palm thought. I think they will lose money on this, so hopefully this is in the plan somehow. If on the other hand you can load other linux programs on it, openoffice, ect. It could be wonderfull. With wine it could run MS programs, so it could be like a laptop replacement, even though they're not marketing it as such. Who knows, I might buy it just to play with, I guess if enough people do that, then it will be a success. It does make me wonder what's in store for the future.

I can't see why I would want a Foleo. Yes, a laptop is much more expensive but at least it would have all my stuff on it. This just duplicates information I'd already have with me.

A wireless keyboard and a TX in lanscape mode seems just as usable and lots more portable. (No one has mentioned whether this would work with a TX anyway, of course.)

This would be awesome for my dad who is a trucker and ONLY uses the web and email from his truck which would now seamlessly integrate with his treo. He would never spend this kind of money on something his 8 year old laptop already does. I have a p2 233mghz latitude that you can buy on eBay for less than the fudgeo and it plays movies. Maybe if they had at least slipped in a media player people could justify it as a media player that syncs with their treo. I basically see this is as a drastic waste of human engineering at it's finest. I keep holding out on the joke here, like we just wanted to tease you with this device but here is the real device! I would have liked the size for note taking in school maybe, but then you have to sync it all to the treo then to the computer to print it out? Hopefully some Linux guru will hack this thing into something usable that I can buy off eBay for $150.00 in a year and a half.

I recently bought an Alphasmart Dana to use for those days when I just need to write. Something light to carry and much cheaper than my iBook. Took this with me for a multi-day conference this week instead of my iBook and it worked very well for taking notes. Also had a cool factor and had all kinds of people doing a double take (this is at an international IT conference in Nairobi with all kinds of laptops on display).

Advantages;
- simple and quick power on/off - no rebooting
- light
- quick to use
- I can concentrate on the writing. No distractions from the other laptop apps
- full keyboard
- takes 2 memory cards so can transfer stuff to my Treo
- uses 3 AA batteries so no power issues. 3 AA batteries lasted whole 3 day conference.

Disadvantages;
- bulky with default case
- monochrome screen unusable in dim light

On my return from the conference, I find out about the Foleo. Seems to have all the advantages of the Alphasmart Dana and overcoming the disadvantages. Also seems to connect seamlessly with the Treo to transfer documents. I had to install WordSmith on the Treo to make my Alpha docs readable on the Treo.

Would I have wished for a Foleo instead? Oh yes! For much less money though...

I've seen a lot of negative discussion for the Foleo. I disagree. In my case I do like it a lot. Imagine instead of taking out a PDA keyboard, having this on your lap or on a table. It's so much comfortable. And this is a new way for developers to make more apps like for syincing the PIM applications, SMLTG, Bonsai! The list could grow bigger. I see future in this, specially now you can have Wi Fi and not draining your Treo's battery. What if you could put Skype in this, and use it with earphones. This is just version 1, with software version 1... but written in Linux plataform, so flexibility should be a must.

If it can sync with the iPhone that'd be the best. When I get the chance, I'll get an iPhone to replace my Treo 680 because the missplacement of my contact details when I sync with my addressbook and Daylite on my Mac drives me crazy. I think perfect synching of the calender and addressbook will be worth the price.

My only worry is the ability to use third party apps on the iPhone. If all works well, an iPhone and Foleo will be just the perfect setup to keep my future laptops safe. And give me the right tools at the right time. Fingers crossed...
