| | Aussies - Using a Treo with Optus? « Thread Started on Feb 16, 2007, 1:41pm » | |
Hi, my wife wants to use a Treo 650 with her Optus SIM. She can make calls and receive them, and she can receive TXT messages. But she cannot send TXT messages. She has now visited two different Optus shops and tried phone support - but is getting nowhere.
Optus even claim that you cannot use the Treo on their network! The Optus web site doesn't list the treo for any of their 'wizards' - except for MMS! Now I know that we should be able to do something as simple as send a TXT, and I wondered if anyone could help me out with settings on the handset itself, or offer any other advice (apart from "switch carrier")
I'm happily using a 680 with Telstra but, due to cancellation penalties, my wife will only switch carrier as a last reort.

Hiya, here's a little more info that may allow the more technically adept to offer suggestions.
We have now established that my wife can RECEIVE TXT messages, send MMS messages and receive MMS messages. Optus are still telling us that the Treo is the problem!
The 'message center number' that we have been given is +61411990001. Does anyone know if this is correct? We have not been given an 'email center number' - is this significant?
In the Messages preferences we are using 'default' for the NetworkProfile.

OK, a little more info. First up, the error message we get when attempting to send a TXT is 4027.
We also cannot get the message center number to 'stick'. It keeps reverting to my Telstra message center number. The weird thing is that the Optus MMS settings are fine, and overwrote my Telstra settings fine. This problem only affects sending TXT. Any help would be greatly appreciated as Optus are not interested and Palm has been useless.

Sorry no real help, but I remember Palm's announcement when the Treo 680 was released stated that it was approved for use on the Optus network. Someone who got one the same time I did had no issues with Optus; however I had to manually configure mine to send MMS messages with Telstra (which Palm did not claim was approved). I got the settings from my old 650.
I recall having a few goes at it, possibly because of a typo, but perhaps the settings had trouble "sticking". Try switching back to automatic configuration, save, then switch back to manual. Throw in a reset or two and/or switching the phone off and on again between editing the configuration.

On the off-chance an Aussie browses this topic, here is the 'resolution'. Optus has switched to 3G SIM cards, which operate in 3G and non-3G phones. BUT the Optus 3G card will NOT work properly in a Treo 650. My wife finally got resolution this week when our local Optus shop staff 'broke' her post paid contract and gave her a 2G pre-paid SIM - which is the only way to get an Optus non-3 G SIM. Then after activating her new pre-paid account they 'upgraded' her to a new post-paid plan and credited her with the cost of breaking the original contract. This bit of lateral thinking came after they spent hours trying to get an Optus 3G card to work and they even sent the Treo to HQ for inspection by the techies. The staff in this optus shop (St Kilda Road, just down from Alma Road) were the only Optus people who were helpful - we tried FOUR different Optus Shops and made multiple calls to the support centre before finding these awesome guys.
In short, if you own a Treo 650 don't even try to use a standard Optus 3G card! Telstra 3G cards DO work, but if you are an Optus customer only attempt to use an existing 2G card and don't let Optus 'upgrade' you to a new SIM!

Thank you for this post. I've just spent the whole day getting the run-around from TPG (Optus network) on this very same problem. Various 'helpful' overseas callcentre operatives told me useless and incorrect information (ie it was my phone, I was still 'locked' to Vodafone even though I can make calls etc, would have to restore all default factory settings blah blah blah). I wish I had googled the problem first then I would have saved myself the mental angst and still have all my settings on my phone and not having to reenter them after doing the hard reset. I'm going to let TPG know in the vain hope that they will pass on the info to their call centre staff.
